President of Gibran National Committee

 

Diafanís magazine had an extensive dialogue with the President of the Gibrán National Committee, Mr. Joseph Fenianos, who detailed the work that is being carried out from Lebanon, homeland of the renowned writer. He also referred to his legacy of peace, freedom and humanity and to the intense cultural and educational works that develop from Bsharri to the country and the world.

 

Since when you are elected as the President of the Gibran National Committee?

In fact, I was elected as Vice President of the Gibran National Committee (GNC) from May 2010 to May 2018 for two consecutive mandates. Each mandate counts four years and in May 2018 I was elected as President. A year  ago exactly.

As you know President and Members of the GNC should be elected by the residents of Bsharri, Gibran’s hometown in Northern Lebanon.

 

What purposes have been raised in this stage of presidency?

The Committee (“GNC”) is a not-for-profit organization.

It holds the exclusive rights to manage the Lebanese author Kahlil Gibran’s copyright in and to his literary and artistic works, so this constant mission will continue to flourish, by promoting Gibran’s literature, messages and ideas to the new generation and the world.

And since the committee is particularly interested in social and cultural development of the region of Becharri; therefore, beside Gibran Museum the committee runs, we are transforming a residential complex the GNC owns into a Cultural Center.

This residential complex that counts  about 12 apartments that were recently renovated and equipped.

Said Cultural Center is consisted of:

• The existing public library that contains more than 15 thousand books.
• The present music institute that was established by the committee in 1972, and offers almost free education for 200 students in piano, laoud, flute, violin, wind coppery instruments.

It is worth mentioning that some of the students became teachers at the National Conservatory.

• A theatre that has a capacity of 300 seats, nothing that there are no other theatre halls in the 22 villages of Becharri Caza.
• An exhibition hall presenting handmade products and artistic works.
• A conventions, lectures and meetings’ hall.
• A language teaching center (French, English, Spanish, German).
• A drawing teaching center.
• A dance teaching institute.
• A computer and internet hall.
• A cinematic library with the purpose of establishing a cinematic club in a later stage.
• A Research center on Gibran.

Some divisions of the Cultural Center Project are still in progress. Such project is very important and vital for Bsharri that is consisted of 22 mountainous villages located 120 km away from Beirut.

This cultural project eliminates the migration of students towards Beirut and abroad, and stimulates the educational collaboration between center and the schools of the same region.

Yet, few years ago, we signed with the Antonine University in Beirut, a MOA, in which the university agreed to print books of Gibran in luxury editions and to reshape some of Gibran Museum spaces.

One of the books that was printed for the first time by the Antonine University after Gibran’s death his “Twenty Drawings” book as for “The Music” book, it has been translated into several languages and about to be printed in Arabic.  It will include studies about the book itself made by professors from the university.

Regarding the works that are already achieved by the
Antonine University, is when you enter the room in which Gibran’s body lays in the Museum, to hear slight echos and feel Gibran’s presence through shapes of light that pass in front of your eyes…This sonography Project  was planned, prepared and applied by Mr. Brahim Samaha, who is a teacher at  the Antonine University and its Chargé Culturel, he is also a painter and the founder of “Cabriolet film festival” and Advisor of the current Lebanese Minister of Culture.

 

What are the activities that  you are carrying out? Are they held at Gibran Museum only or also in other cities in Lebanon and abroad?

To deliver Gibran’s messages of freedom, peace, equality, humanity, we should have activities in Gibran’s hometown, everywhere in Lebanon and abroad.

Gibran should stay alive in the memories of the generations to come locally and worldwide.

The Gibran National Committee ensures a cultural presence in Lebanon and abroad through its relations with the institutions, art centers, schools, universities, men of letters and researchers; and through its activities in the cultural, artistic and educational domains that include book saloons, painting exhibitions, literary and artistic contests on Gibran’s works, as well as cultural conferences and concerts.

We recently have organized at  the Immigration Museum of Museums Board of Victoria in Melbourne – Australia, an Exhibtition entitled “The Garden of The Prophet”.  The exhibition was held from November 27, 2018 till March 17, 2019.

The exhibition that is exclusively commissioned by immigration Museum, with grant funding from the Council for Australian-arab relations of the Department of Foreing Affairs and Trade, inlcuded original paintings of Gibran, sketches, manuscripts and artefacts in addition to Gibran’s writing desk and artist box and a signed and annotated copy of The Prophet by Elvis Presley, who used to buy the book as a gift for friends.

On the other hand, this year and same as every year the GNC honors the outstanding students from different schools of Bsharreh Caza who have passed baccalaureate II, brevet and technical official exams with top grades. This year’s celebration will be heldas usual in Mary Haskel Square – Gibran Museum – Bsharreh,the date is set on June, 1, 2019.

Aiming to encourage the outstanding students, sum of money will be distributed on each one of them from the GNC.

Each year ‘s promotion is named after an exceptional and remarkable person who passed away or still alive.

This year’s promotion is named after Dr. George Geagea who gave a lot of his time to serve the Gibran National Committee as a member and Bsharreh municipality as president.

Anyway, this beloved person, may the Lord prolongs his life, was a significant man of dialogue during the period of conflicts.  He promoted peace and influenced people in fights.

Also, a program called “Gibranic Days” is held every year in Bsharreh. This yearly routine engages international folkor festivals that used to be held by embassies in Lebanon, handicraft, cultural, paintings, photography, exhibitions, music concerts, dictation and poems readings competitions. activities in details are published onour Facebook page that you can findunder “gibran national commitee”.

As Iearlier mentioned, the GNC enhances its relation with school and universities.  Just few days ago the Antonine School in Hasroun village in northern Lebanon, organized a competition for its students in which they were asked to read poems, and write dictations and to collect information about Gibran Khalil Gibran and gather them in texts.  Actually the winners received their gifts in my presence.

 

Do you consider that the new information and communication technologies serve as a complement to spread the legacy of Gibran Khalil Gibran?

It is very true that the new information and communication technologies provided immense improvements in our lives.

It helped us realize our aim which is to spread Gibran messages to the world and keep him alive. But also it is dangerous sometimes, especially when fake ideas about Gibran are published and spread.

Thus, people who like to follow and read about Gibran through Internet, applications etc. should find entrusted sources.

Finally, I just want to point out to your readers that Gibran who is known every where has schools, universities, parks, streets named after him all over the world, also there is the Khalil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace created by Liza and George Zakhem at the Meryland University in Merryland – USA, the chair is an endowed academic program that strengthens understanding between Eastern and Western cultures in general, and the Arab ethos and American values in particular.

Do you know that in July 2009, The International Astronomical Union (IAU) named a crater after Gibran on planet  Mercury!!

Lately, a statistic made by Professor Francesco Medici and researcher Glenn Kalem shows that the Prophet book was translated into more than 104 languages.

Gibran is unlimited. Facebook  pages,  websites, associations, activities and other issued related to him can’t be framed in one piece of the world they are expanded to reach the four corners of the globe.

ENTREVISTA EN ESPAÑOL

Revista Diafanís mantuvo un extenso diálogo con el Presidente del Comité Nacional Gibrán, Mr. Joseph Fenianos, quien nos detalló la labor que se lleva a cabo desde el Líbano, tierra natal del reconocido escritor. También se refirió a su legado de paz, libertad y humanidad y a la intensa labor educativa cultural  que desde Bsharri se desarrolla en el país y en el mundo.

 

¿Desde qué fecha usted está a cargo de la presidencia del Comité Nacional Gibrán?

De hecho, fui elegido como vicepresidente del Comité Nacional de Gibran  (GNC) desde mayo de 2010 hasta mayo de 2018, por dos mandatos consecutivos. Cada mandato cuenta con cuatro años de ejercicio  en la función y en mayo de 2018 fui elegido presidente, hace exactamente un año.

Como saben, el presidente y los miembros del GNC deben ser elegidos por los residentes de Bsharri, la ciudad natal de Gibran, en el Norte del Líbano.

 

¿Cuáles son los propósitos que se ha planteado en esta etapa de la presidencia?

El Comité («GNC») es una organización sin fines de lucro. Posee los derechos exclusivos para administrar los derechos de autor del autor libanés Kahlil Gibran en y para sus obras literarias y artísticas, por lo que esta misión constante seguirá floreciendo, al promover la literatura, los mensajes y las ideas de Gibran a la nueva generación y al mundo.

Y dado que el comité está particularmente interesado en el desarrollo social y cultural de la región de Bsharri; Por ello, junto al Museo Gibran, el comité desarrolla sus actividades.

Estamos transformando un complejo residencial que posee el GNC en un Centro Cultural. Este complejo residencial cuenta con 12 apartamentos que fueron recientemente renovados y equipados.

Dicho Centro Cultural está constituido por:

• La biblioteca pública existente que contiene más de 15 mil libros.
• El instituto de música actual que fue establecido por el comité en 1972, ofrece educación casi gratuita para 200 estudiantes en instrumentos de piano, laud, flauta, violín, e instrumentos de cobre de viento.

Vale la pena mencionar que algunos de los estudiantes se convirtieron en maestros en el Conservatorio Nacional.

• Un teatro que tiene una capacidad de 300 asientos, único en su estilo en los 22 pueblos de Bsharri Caza.
• Una sala de exposiciones donde se presentan productos artesanales y artesanales.
• Un salón de convenciones, conferencias y reuniones.
• Un centro de enseñanza de idiomas (francés, inglés, español, alemán).
• Un centro de enseñanza del dibujo.
• Un instituto de enseñanza de la danza.
• Un salón de computación con acceso a Internet.
• Una biblioteca cinematográfica con el propósito de establecer un club cinematográfico en una etapa posterior.
• Un centro de investigación en Gibran.

Algunas divisiones del Proyecto del Centro Cultural aún están en progreso. Este proyecto es muy importante y vital para Bsharri, que tiene 22 ciudades montañosas ubicadas a 120 km de Beirut.

Este proyecto cultural eliminó la migración de estudiantes a Beirut y al extranjero, y estimula la colaboración educativa entre el centro y las escuelas de esta misma región.

Sin embargo, hace unos años firmamos con la Université Antonine en Beirut, un MOA, en el que la universidad aceptó imprimir los libros de Gibran en ediciones de lujo y remodelar algunos de los espacios del Museo Gibran.

Uno de los libros que fue impreso por primera vez por la Université Antonine después de la muerte de Gibran fue su libro «Veinte dibujos» y el libro «La música»,  ha sido traducido a varios idiomas y está a punto de ser impreso en árabe. Incluirá estudios sobre el libro hecho por profesores de la universidad.

Respecto a las obras que ya se lograron en la Université Antonine, es cuando entras en la sala donde se encuentra el cuerpo de Gibran en el Museo, para escuchar ecos leves y sentir la presencia de Gibran a través de formas de luz que pasan frente a tus ojos … Este proyecto de sonidos y sus representaciones  fue planeado, preparado y aplicado por el Sr. Brahim Samaha, quien es profesor en la Université Antonine, también es pintor y fundador del «Festival de cine Cabriolet» y Asesor del actual Ministro de Cultura del Líbano.

 

¿Cuáles son las actividades que están realizando? ¿Se celebran solo en el Museo Gibran o también en otras ciudades del Líbano y en el extranjero?

Para llevar los mensajes de libertad, paz, igualdad, humanidad de Gibran, debemos tener actividades en la ciudad natal de Gibran, en cualquier lugar del Líbano y en el extranjero.

Gibran debe mantenerse vivo en los recuerdos de las generaciones venideras a nivel local y mundial.

El Comité Nacional Gibran garantiza una presencia cultural en el Líbano y en el extranjero a través de sus relaciones con las instituciones, centros de arte, escuelas, universidades, literatos e investigadores; y a través de sus actividades en los dominios culturales, artísticos y educativos que incluyen salones de libros, exposiciones de pintura, concursos literarios y artísticos sobre las obras de Gibran, así como conferencias y conciertos culturales.

Recientemente hemos organizado en el Museo de Inmigración de la Junta de Museos de Victoria en Melbourne, Australia, una exposición titulada «El jardín del profeta». La exposición se realizó del 27 de noviembre de 2018 al 17 de marzo de 2019.

La exposición fue comisionada exclusivamente por el Museo de la Inmigración, con una subvención del Consejo para las relaciones árabe-australianas del Departamento de Asuntos Exteriores y Comercio; incluyó pinturas originales de Gibran, bocetos, manuscritos y artefactos, además del escritorio y la caja de artista de Gibran y una copia firmada y con anotaciones de “El Profeta” por Elvis Presley, que acostumbraba a comprar el libro como regalo para los amigos.

Por otro lado, este año y al igual que todos los años, GNC honra a los estudiantes sobresalientes de diferentes escuelas de Bsharreh Caza que han aprobado el bachillerato II, exámenes oficiales breves y técnicos con las mejores calificaciones. La celebración de este año como es habitual será en la plaza Mary Haskel – Museo Gibran – Bsharreh, la fecha que se establece es el 1 de junio de 2019.

Con el objetivo de alentar a los estudiantes sobresalientes, la suma de dinero se distribuirá en cada uno de ellos de la GNC. La promoción de cada año lleva el nombre de una persona excepcional y notable que falleció o aún vive. La promoción de este año lleva el nombre del Dr. George Geagea, que dedicó gran parte de su tiempo a servir como miembro del Comité Nacional de Gibran y al municipio de Bsharreh como presidente.

De todos modos, esta persona amada, que el Señor prolongue su vida, fue un importante hombre de diálogo durante el período de conflictos. Promovió la paz e influyó en las personas que estaban en las luchas.

Además, cada año se celebra en Bsharreh un programa llamado «Días de Gibran». Esta rutina anual involucra festivales folclóricos internacionales que solían ser llevados a cabo por embajadas en el Líbano, artesanías, cultura, pintura, fotografía, exhibiciones, conciertos de música, concursos de dictado y de lectura de poemas. Las actividades en detalles se publican en nuestra página de Facebook, que puede encontrar en el «Comité Nacional Gibran».

Como ya se mencionó, el GNC mejora su relación con la escuela y las universidades. Hace apenas unos días, la Escuela Antonine en la ciudad de Hasroun, en el Norte del Líbano, organizó un concurso para sus estudiantes en el que se les pidió que leyeran poemas y escribieran dictados, para recopilar información sobre Gibran Khalil Gibran y recopilarlos en textos. En realidad, los ganadores recibieron sus regalos en mi presencia.

 

¿Considera que las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación sirven de complemento para difundir el legado de Gibran Khalil Gibran?

Es muy cierto que las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación proporcionaron inmensas mejoras en nuestras vidas.

Nos ayudó a realizar nuestro objetivo, que es difundir los mensajes de Gibran al mundo y mantenerlo vivo. Pero también es peligroso a veces, especialmente cuando se publican y difunden ideas falsas sobre Gibran.

Por lo tanto, las personas a quienes les gusta seguir y leer sobre Gibran a través de Internet, aplicaciones, etc. deben encontrar fuentes confiadas.

Finalmente, solo quiero señalar a sus lectores que Gibran, quien es conocido en todas partes, tiene escuelas, universidades, parques, calles que llevan su nombre en todo el mundo, y también está la Cátedra de Valores y Paz de Khalil Gibran creada por Liza y George Zakhem en la Universidad de Meryland en Merryland, EE. UU., Es un programa académico que fortalece el entendimiento entre las culturas oriental y occidental en general, y el espíritu árabe y los valores estadounidenses en particular.
